I often serve as a judge at professional international hairdressing championships. There, we evaluate creativity, complex techniques, and impressive wow effects created with liters of hairspray and hot styling tools. It’s beautiful as an art form. But when I return to my beloved clients at Denis Kovalenko Salon in Tallinn, I always say the same thing: true beauty in real life is lightness, freshness, and absolute cleanliness.
When hair flows beautifully, shines, and stays fresh for a long time, it is not magic and, contrary to popular myths, not always just “good genetics.” It is the result of proper care. And it all begins where we cannot see it.
Why do we forget about the scalp?
We are so used to taking care of the length of our hair: we buy masks for the ends, apply oils for shine, and use heat protection products. But hair is like a plant — you cannot grow a beautiful flower without taking care of the soil.
The foundation of healthy hair is the scalp. Its condition determines whether the hair has volume at the roots, how quickly it becomes oily, and how comfortable you feel overall. Truly clean hair is not about washing it aggressively “until it squeaks.” It’s about balance — when the scalp can breathe and feels healthy and comfortable.
From Runways to Real Hair Health
Over the years of working as a top stylist — whether teaching other professionals, judging competitions, or working daily behind the chair at Denis Kovalenko Salon — I have developed one important rule for myself. True professionalism is not about creating a beautiful look for just one evening. My goal is to build a strong foundation for the health of your hair.
If the skin on our face becomes dry or irritated, we apply gentle, soothing skincare. The same principle applies to the scalp! It needs delicate care, not harsh cleansing.
As soon as we find the right shampoo that calms and restores balance, a real transformation happens. The need to wash your hair every day disappears, discomfort fades away, and the hair at the roots becomes incredibly light and voluminous.
My main goal in the salon is not simply to give you a stylish haircut or perfect color. I want you to enjoy your hair every single day. I want the feeling of flawless cleanliness, freshness, and comfort to stay with you from one wash to the next.
Love your hair, take care of your scalp — and your hair will absolutely reward you in return!
